Couples counseling focuses on building strong foundations of communication and how couples best work together as a healthy team. Our couples counseling comes from two principals: Gottman and Emotional Focused Therapy.
During counseling, couples are guided to recognize points of stress and dissatisfaction within the relationship and a deep understanding of each individual’s perspective. We help the couple design a plan to develop skills of communication that can address conflicts in respectful, kind, and productive ways. The objective is to develop better levels of functionality, a deep understanding of each individual, and how to best work together as a couple.
Counseling for children varies from adult psychotherapy in the fact both the children and their families need additional guidance to understand and discuss complex emotions and behavior both in the child’s mind and the adult’s world. Our staff are trained to take in account multiple variables such as the child’s age, specific difficulties, development issues, family life, and other circumstances that influence children. Therapy techniques such as play therapy, art therapy, and sand tray therapy may be applied to help young children to express their insights and emotions. Child counseling may be one-on-one time with the child or together with family members. The objective of child counseling is to help children build up a positive outlook, better identify their emotions and why they feel the way they do, and how to handle emotions appropriately.
Adolescence can be a challenging time. Many teenagers and adolescent youth need help working through self esteem, school stress, social anxiety, grief, abuse, peer pressure, and loss of romantic interests. Adolescent counseling emphasizes self-esteem and identifying their worth as a unique individual. We specialize in working with teens to teach them how to cope with stress, express their thoughts and opinions constructively, and develop problem solving skills.
Family counseling brings each family member together so they can learn to listen, understand, and properly communicate with one another in order to resolve conflicts, and air grievances.
Family matters can become complicated in the best of situations and especially when dealing with stress, grief, loss, and physical or emotional injury. Conflicts between parents, parent and children, and other family members can be dismantled and resolved in a safe environment.
Each family member learns to express their fears, hopes, stress, and desire to one another so healing can begin.
